Stefano Mitri

Yesterday, we had a lecture from stepfano discussing design possibilities and shifting perspectives on objects and meanings. I really like his definition of design and one i can finally agree on:

"design is not art, design is not poetry
design has to function. It needs a purpose, a brief, a client, someone willing to pay.
we love art, we love poetry, but design is different "

and he is a believer in "form follows function". Ticks lots of boxes!

He also added some interesting comments about designing new chairs as an example. He stated that people don't want or need new chairs, they want new stories. As designers, we invent new lanuages and meanings to our products.

Found Electronics

I really like the quirky-ness this group of guys have towards electronics and their love to making music.

I mostly admire their botanic garden project mostly because i know how hard it is to program solenoids and well feel their pain for using so many! What i also liked about this project was that they kept their mechanical parts exposed which added interest to their project and i felt it brought truth and honesty to it, and, the music wasn't too bad either!

I managed to show 2 of the guys my project in 'PLAY to MAKE' and recieved some really nice feedback from them. They seemed to like the idea and offered help and advice willingly. Nice guys!

Gummy Bear Chandeliar

These gummy bears are made from plastic and boy do i want to own one!

What looks like a window looking through to a man drawing on a clock face, is in fact a LCD screen... I suspect he might of done some good old fashioned IPD fakery and is in the clock box...



I'm not sure if this is the 'coolest clock ever' but my god it is pretty damn smart! I wonder how many takes it took?

Underfall

This table cloth turns a negative situation into a positive experience when a drink is spilled. The pattern is revealed only when a spillage occurs and from the looks of the video, the cloth absorbs the liquid too.

I find this nice as not only does it allow you to continue your meal uninterrupted, it makes having a table cloth worth while and interesting to own. (I must point out that i am usually a table cloth hater) I applaud this woman!!

Tego Remy

Now this is an impressive shelving i find to be nice! What a fantastic idea to make something so average not so average. I really like the pattern's clean cut lines and how the blue does not cover the edges adding depth to the pattern.

Vancouver 2010 Olympic medals

I'm really impressed with Omer Arbel and Corrine Hunt's design for the 2010 Olympic medals in Vancouver:

All the medals are unique and different from one another but share an image from the same piece of art. I like this as it creates a bigger picture and makes the medals far more rewarding than a mass produced coin.

What impresses me the most is that all the medals are made from e-waste. The quality they got by recycling parts of computers and mobile phones is inspiring.
